The Cărtureşti Story

Books, Tea, Movies, All That Jazz

Cărtureşti is a cultural venue that functions as a bookshop, tea studio, and project space, taking direct action towards revitalizing the Romanian artistic life, urban pleasures and social responsibilities. Since its opening at the end of year 2000, Cărtureşti set its mission on changing the trend in the downsloping book market, promoting quality and value by regarding clients’ demands as a priority investment.

After three years, Cărtureşti opens a new bookshop in Bucharest in a beautiful 19th century mansion. In 2006, Cărtureşti venues open in Iaşi and Timişoara, then Cluj, Constanţa and Suceava. In 2008, a partnership with the Romanian Peasants’ Museum makes possible a new bookshop in Bucharest and the Iaşi bookstore doubles its space, reaching 600 sqm. Right now, Cărtureşti Verona is the biggest bookshop in Eastern Europe hosted by historical monuments, as Cărtureşti recently bought a neighbouring building conceived by Horia Creangă, one of the most important Romanian architects, and saved it, thus, from illegal demolition.

Cărtureşti hosts over 300 cultural events every year: book launches, concerts, exhibitions, multimedia events. Some of the most well known writers and artists met their Romanian public here. Among them: Mario Vargas Llosa, Ibrahim Ferrer, Pascal Bruckner, Jonathan Coe, Marc Levy, Frederic Beigbeder etc.

usa.carturesti.ro is an online service of the Cărtureşti bookstores in Romania serving the Romanian community and larger American audiences interested in Romanian literature throughout USA and Canada, developed as part of the collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York.
